Falling for Falafel

Ever visit "Anytown, USA" and discover a little out of the way restaurant serving fresh, fantastic, food of the ethnic variety?

I know I have.

I have eaten some of the best BBQ in Henderson, NC, amazing Asian food in Springfield, IL and irresistible Italian food in Chicago.

Today I came across authentic Middle Eastern fare in Delray Beach, FL called Fala Mediterranean Café.

While picking up some dry cleaning in a shopping center at the corner of Linton Blvd. & Military Trail, I spotted a big “Fala Falafel” sign outside a small restaurant only two doors down from the dry cleaners.

I fell in love with Middle Eastern cuisine during my one year abroad at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. As you can imagine, you can’t get more authentic Middle Eastern food anywhere else.

What's YOUR
Favorite Mediterranean Food?

Some of my favorites were shawarma, shishlik, humus, kibbeh and of course falafel (FYI: not all available at Fala). In fact, Jerusalem has curbside push - cart food stands serving amazing falafel sandwiches the way New York has hot dog and pretzel vendors.

Israeli-Born Owners
Bring Authentic Middle Eastern Food to Delray Beach

When I discovered that David & Leisa’s, owner's of Fala Mediterranean Cafe, brought the authentic middle Eastern taste to Delray Beach, I was truly excited!
Mediterranean
So far I have tried the falafel, roasted egg plant and the shawarma (lamb on the spit). All were fresh and delicious.

The falafel sandwich comes with fresh veggie options like: diced tomato, lettuce, cucumber, pickles, olives and much more.

The veggie set up is Subway restaurant-style where everything is in front of you and you tell the friendly counter staff what you want in your pita bread along with the falafel.

Vegetarian or Meat-Lover...
They've Got What You Want

This café is perfect for vegetarians because even if you don’t care for falafel, there are many more items to choose from including: eggplant; hummus and feta with salad sandwiches.

For you meat and poultry lovers, enjoy the chicken shawarma; gyro or Moroccan Chicken. There’s even tuna platters & sandwiches. Not in the mood for a sandwich? Everything listed can be served salad/platter style or in a wrap.

And there’s even a $6.99 lunch special which includes the falafel sandwich, fries and a fountain soft drink.

Now when I say everything is fresh, there was someone in the back room cutting up the tomatoes and lettuce while I was there. No bagged veggies here my friends. The falafel is not the frozen kind either. It’s fried up fresh right in front of you. If you haven’t tasted hot, fresh, crispy falafel, you don’t know what you are missing.

Desserts, Smoothies, Turkish Coffee,

Cappuccino, Baklava...Anyone?

Do you like frozen smoothies? Do you enjoy Turkish coffee? At Fala Falafel I tried something I have never had anywhere else. A coffee smoothie called the Turkish Coffee Knockout. This delectable frozen treat is made with: bananas, peanut butter, chocolate syrup, frozen non-fat yogurt and espresso. It was out of this world and a nice balance to the piping hot falafel.

You can also try the marvelous Milk & Honey Cappuccino. There are fruit smoothies too like: Greek Isles Sunrise; Mount Carmel Delight; Jaffa Orange Extreme; Athenian Strawberry Fields; Jerusalem Gold and Moroccan Chocolate Malt. Sounds great don’t they?

There are assorted desserts from the desert (sorry, I had to) like sweet and flaky baklava and more.

Fala Mediterranean Café
Locations

Fala Mediterranean Café has several locations including the restaurant I ate at which is located in the former Albertson’s Shopping Center at 4801 Linton Blvd, (facing Military Road) Delray Beach.

There is another at 2275 S. University Dr. in Davie, FL.

They are open for breakfast and until 9 PM which is great if you just got out of a movie matinee. For more, call (561) 498-8383. Catering is also available.

So my friends, if you are like me and love the taste of the Middle East, you must try the Fala Mediterranean Café.

In a word, it is truly, “mitzuyan.” That’s Hebrew for excellent.
