When Linda Bean's Perfect Maine Lobster Roll (heir to the L.L. Bean fortune) opened in Delray Beach a few weeks ago, I couldn't wait to try it.

I found myself working late tonight (as usual) and decided to give it a go. And wow, am I glad I did.

At a time when just as many restaurants are closing their doors as opening them, on a strip of East Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach, where you can't throw a shoe without hitting six Italian eateries, it's nice to have a casual eatery where you can roll in, order a sandwich and a beer, and enjoy a quiet meal overlooking The Avenue (Atlantic Avenue).

Although the signature dish is the lobster roll, it's the same price ($15.50) as the lobster panini, which the (very helpful) cashier told me was a better deal because it had more meat and it was served warm.

The bread was great (I may order the grilled cheese off the kids' menu next time because it was crusty and crispy even with the metric ton of lobster meat).

The lobster had a hint of a buttery flavor, and the sandwich was served with an herbed mayo. I'd read other reviews in which the customers had hoped for a more-unique topping, but the fact that it wasn't anything more-exotic served to let the lobster be the center of attention ... as it should be.

I'm not normally a fan of Shipyard beer, but I ordered the pumpkin ale and it ended up being a nice pairing. I liked that you could also order wine by the glass.

All told, the menu is simple (sandwiches and salads), the selection of adult beverages is decent and the ambiance is clean and quaint. It will probably be a while before I part with $20 for a sandwich and a beer on the go, but for a special treat to yourself, I'd definitely recommend Linda Bean's as a great addition to Atlantic Avenue in Delray!
